A study of nearly 50,000 teenage girls revealed that a majority listed appearance as their biggest concern (Exeter University, U.K., 1998). Another study (Fat Talk, Harvard University Press, 2000) indicated that 90% of teenage girls frequently think about their body shape. Add to that, pressure from friends, boys and parents, and it’s understandable that this study found that 86% of teenage girls are, or think they should be dieting. And it’s no surprise that 5-10 million girls in the U.S. have eating disorders.

Teenagers can become confused when they see photographs in magazines. On one end, young women are told to be proud of themselves because they are said to be beautiful on the inside and out. How can a young girl feel beautiful if they are in constant contact with airbrushed photographs and when the people they see in these magazine ads are perfectly toned, perfectly manicured human beings?

The problem is magazines paint a constant picture of perfect, blemish free beauty that girls know is so far away from what they see in the mirror that it feels unattainable. This creates a sense of low self esteem which can lead to girls taking drastic and unhealthy decisions in the fruitless search to look like the latest airbrushed photograph of Cheryl Cole.

The reality is what they see in the glossy magazines isn't real, it's an illusion. We will show you how soft lighting is used to create a flattering image before demonstrating how the magazine maniuplate the image to remove all flaws and create that 'perfect' look. You will discover that it has nothing to do with dieting or plastic surgery.
